A union is asking cannabis grower WeedMD of Mount Brydges to voluntarily agree to bargain for a contract covering concerns about “hours, scheduling, unjust terminations, abuse of power, and unsafe working conditions.”
Cannabis growers are deemed part of the agriculture industry and therefore excluded from the Ontario Labour Relations Act which forces companies to recognize unions that sign up a majority of the workforce as members.
The United Food and Commercial Workers Union (UFCW) claims the company has illegally terminated at least one worker for union activities.
In another case, the UFCW has filed an appeal against MedRelief and there have been hearings over about a year on motions and related issues.
The case is continuing before the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Tribunal. The union filed a constitutional challenge related to the Ontario Agricultural Employees Protection Act which applies to workers in the agriculture industry.
