U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers working at the Peace Bridge Cargo Facility last Friday discovered 1,227 pounds (557 kilograms) of cannabis in a commercial shipment manifested as paper towels and dishwasher detergent.
The truck and trailer were undergoing a non-intrusive examination when anomalies inside the trailer were identified, notes a CBP statement Monday.
That prompted a canine search, with the drug-detector dog quickly alerting to something up with the pallets inside the vehicle. The subsequent physical inspection revealed multiple vacuum-sealed packages within the pallets, the content of which field-tested positive for the properties of cannabis. The estimated street value of the illegal drugs was US$2.4 million ($3 million).
