Smiths Falls could be home to three new cannabis stores.

ShinyBud Cannabis Co. has applied to the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) to open a store at 8 Beckwith St. N. – the latest company to apply to open a cannabis retail store in town.

ShinyBud’s application is currently undergoing public notice. Residents have until Sept. 4 to file an objection to the application.

T Cannabis plans to open a store at 4 Russell St. E. Tweed has also applied to open a store at their production site in town at 1 Hershey Dr. Both company’s applications are still in progress with the AGCO.

Nathaniel Morris, regional manager for T Cannabis, said their company has completed and passed their site inspection months ago. Morris couldn’t provide a date when he expected their store would open. He said they are still waiting for the government to give them the green light.

Morris said he welcomes other cannabis retail stores in town and hopes they can co-exist to be part of the larger cannabis tourism landscape in Smiths Falls.

“We want other retailers here,” he said.

In 2019, the Town of Smiths Falls launched a cannabis tourism strategy, which includes key action items such as the development of cannabis retail and consumption businesses, among others.

Patti Zebchuck, media relations manager of Canopy Growth Corporation, said that Canopy Growth has been in talks with the province regarding the establishment of a “farmgate store” at their Smiths Falls facility.

“To date, those conversations have been positive,” she said. “We’re looking forward to being able to connect the immersive educational experience of the Visitor Centre journey to a personal experience offering customers the ability to purchase products at the retail store.”
