It looks like Grey Bruce will finally have its first legal cannabis shops open this year.
Applications have been submitted to the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario for three marijuana shops in Owen Sound and Southampton.
According to the AGCO’s online database detailing the status of cannabis retail stores in Ontario, there are two applications in progress in Owen Sound and one in Southampton.
Grey Bruce does not have any legal pot shops at all yet. Marijuana consumers have had to rely solely on the province’s online distributor, the Ontario Cannabis Store, since legalization in October 2018.
A company called “Cannabis Grey Bruce” is applying to open stores at 236 8th Street East in Owen Sound and at 17 Albert Street in Southampton.
Google and Facebook searches of the company name returned no relevant results.
An AGCO spokesperson in an email the public notice period for the proposed Owen Sound location on 8th Street East closed on April 1 and there were no comments received.
For the Southampton store application, the public notice period opened Tuesday and will continue until May 5.
Capturing Eden has also applied for a retail cannabis store licence at 973 2nd Avenue West in Owen Sound. It is also in the public notice period until April 30.
The public notice period allows residents of a community to submit comments through the AGCO portal to determine whether the proposed location is appropriate.
The AGCO spokesperson says comments are considered that relate to protecting public health and safety, restricting youth access to cannabis and preventing illicit cannabis activities.
