Niagara’s third cannabis store is ready to open its doors, as soon as it gets the OK from the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario.
Although Jon Conquergood, chief executive officer of Ontario Cannabis Holdings, previously expected Corner Cannabis to be open by mid-January at 395 Ontario St., he said the business is still awaiting final approval from the provincial government licensing body.
“The store’s all built and ready to go,” said Conquergood, whose company was brought in to help the St. Catharines retailer get his shop up and running.
“We’re just waiting for the AGCO to give the owner his retail operator’s licence. Once he has that in place, typically it’s three to four weeks from that moment.”
In addition to receiving provincial government approval, he said the business still has to go through other licensing steps, including a retail store authorization, an account needs to be set up with the Ontario Cannabis Store, and staff training has to be completed.
“It’s just sitting in the hands of the AGCO at this point, but we do expect an answer pretty soon — hopefully this week.”
The AGCO website lists the status of the application for Corner Cannabis as “in progress.”
Conquergood said the employer has gone through the staff recruitment process, having posted online job openings.
He estimated as many as 25 people will be working at the store once it opens.
The storefront has already attracted a lot of curiosity from people who stopped by as work was underway.
