The City of London has filed an objection with the province’s marijuana regulator over a proposed pot shop that officials say is too close to a library and community centre in northwest London.
The cannabis retail store proposed for the Sherwood Forest Mall is among 18 looking to set up shop in London in the coming months.
Link Cannabis at 1225 Wonderland Rd. N. is singled out in a report going to the community and protective services committee next week.
Under a city policy adopted in January 2019, brick-and-mortar marijuana stores must be at least 150 metres from schools, libraries, community centres, arenas and pools.
“It’s close to the Sherwood Forest public library and the Medway Community Centre,” London’s deputy chief building official Peter Kokkoros said of the proposed pot shop. “That’s why we flagged it.”
But there may be little the city can do because the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) has the final say on whether a cannabis retail store can open at its proposed location.
During the 15-day public notice period for the Wonderland Road store — a time when anyone can object to the proposed location — the city’s submission was the only one filed with the AGCO, spokesperson Raymond Kahnert said.
Pot shops are allowed to open in any commercial space where retail is allowed, as long they’re 150 metres away from schools, said Kahnert, who didn’t disclose when the commission will make a final decision on the proposed Link Cannabis location.
“I cannot provide you with an estimated date when the process will conclude. Each store applicant is at a different stage of the licensing process,” he said in an email. “The AGCO will only license applicants who meet all legal and regulatory requirements.”
Cannabis Link has also submitted proposals to open stores at Highbury Avenue and Huron Street and at Hyde Park and Sarnia roads.
With seven pot shops already operating, London has more of businesses than any other Southwestern Ontario city, though that title will soon go to Windsor, where almost two dozen have applied to open on top of three already operating.
