Over a 22-year battle with depression, Kristen Bell has tried just about every treatment imaginable.

It wasn’t until recently, however, that the 40-year-old turned to psilocybin, the main active ingredient in magic mushrooms.

In a recent appearance on actor Sean Hayes and Dr. Priyanka Wali’s podcast, Hypochondriactor, Bell said she grew intrigued about the therapeutic potential of mushrooms after reading Michael Pollan’s 2018 bestselling book How to Change Your Mind.

“I really wanted to try some psilocybin and feel what kind of doors open, have a trip that was my own,” she said, per People.

She enlisted the help of her husband, Dax Shepard, who sat with her as she tried mushrooms for the first time on her birthday.

“I said, ‘I really would like to experience this. And I don’t want to, I’m not going to party with it, but I want to know what this feels like. And I want to talk while I’m doing it, and I want you to talk to me.’ And he took me on a walk around the neighbourhood and it was so lovely.”

Bell said she also experienced a vision of “a beautiful lady” and was overcome with positive thoughts about her own body,

“In my head, I had separated this body that had done so much good in my life, that has taken me through happiness and pain and workouts and laziness that I was just like, couldn’t stop touching my legs going, ‘You’re so strong. You’re so elegant.’”
