Health Canada is warning Canadians of an unauthorized product being sold in speciality tobacco stores and headshops in Edmonton that may be sold online, as well, that contains synthetic cannabinoids.

The product, called Brainfreeze Potpourri or Brainfreeze Herbal Incense, is labeled as an herbal product and contains synthetic cannabinoids. Health Canada notes that when inhaled or ingested, synthetic cannabinoids can lead to “severe health risks, such as vomiting, chest pain, increased heart rate, vision blackouts, headaches, kidney damage, agitation, high blood pressure, and psychosis.” Health Canada says they already have received one report of a serious adverse reaction following use of the product.

Synthetic cannabinoids are not legal in Canada and Health Canada advises consumers who have these products in their possession to dispose of them immediately, and also that retailers who have these products should contact their legal counsel for advice on how to properly get rid of them, noting that legal action could potentially be taken against both the seller and consumers who have these products in their possession.

Health Canada says they are collecting information about “synthetic marijuana” products, taking steps to ensure that retailers are aware that they cannot be legally sold in Canada, and seeking to stop the entry of these products into Canada.
