Police have charged a Richmond Hill resident following an explosion and fire Dec. 19 in a small-scale drug lab in a Richmond Hill residence.

York Regional Police were called to a condominium complex on Norman Bethune Avenue shortly after 9 p.m.

Officers arrived at the building, located in the Hwy. 7 and Leslie Street area, to find several units in the building evacuated.

A man suffering from serious injuries outside was transported to hospital for treatment.

Investigators determined the man had set up a small-scale cannabis-extraction lab inside one of the units. While attempting to extract cannabis oil, there was an explosion which caused damage to the residence.

The explosion triggered the sprinklers on the first floor of the building, resulting in about 10 units being evacuated due to significant water damage, police said.

He was charged Dec. 20 after the execution of a search warrant and investigations by YRP and the Ontario Fire Marshal.
