An Aylmer-based medical marijuana company is moving into a big but unusual market — seniors care, including several in the London area.
WeedMD Inc. has landed a deal to supply cannabis product to 20 long-term care and seniors homes run by Jarlette Health Services, including Meadow Park long-term care homes in London and Chatham.
That deal follows up another completed in September for WeedMD to supply the PeopleCare chain, which has long-term-care homes in London, Stratford and Tavistock.
WeedMD CEO Bruce Dawson-Scully said medical cannabis is gaining wide acceptance for treatment with seniors.
He said almost all of the cannabis product supplied by WeedMD is in the form of an oil extract that is taken by mouth and does not produce the “high” associated with recreational marijuana.
“We are not getting seniors high. They are not have bong sessions with their bingo or rolling joints. This is real medicine in the form of oil and it’s working,” he said.
Dawson-Scully said people in long-term-care homes average about a dozen medications daily to treat conditions such as pain, insomnia, anxiety and muscle spasms. He said various strains of medical marijuana can be an effective alternative treatment in treating those problems.
Although seniors are traditionally the age group most opposed to marijuana use, Dawson-Scully said acceptance is growing.
