A proposal has been submitted to turn an abandoned KFC on King Street into Port Colborne’s first cannabis retail outlet.
The building, which has been on the seller’s block for a few years, was purchased earlier this summer. This week, notice was given by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario, which oversees the licensing of retail cannabis stores, that an application had been made for a store in Port Colborne at that location.
The commission requires a 15-day public notice period once the application is accepted. The public notice period for the proposed cannabis store in Port Colborne expires Sept. 13.
During the notice period, residents can make submissions to the commission either in favour or against the proposed store.
The commission examines three factors when making its decision: protecting public health and safety; protecting youth and restricting their access to cannabis; and preventing illicit activities in relation to cannabis.
