Confused about cannabis?
You’re not alone.
Police services across Canada are still figuring out if they need special guidelines for frontline officers.
Cannabis is cancelled for cops in Calgary, for example — even when they’re off-duty. Calgary has prohibited recreational use of pot for its officers at any time.
Here’s the official inside dope on dope for the Alberta city’s officers: “Sworn members who are qualified to use firearms and are able to be operationally deployed are prohibited from using recreational cannabis while on or off duty.”
In other major cities, legal pot doesn’t get any special treatment under the “fit for service” guidelines.
Cops in Ottawa and Vancouver, for example, are allowed to use cannabis off-duty once it’s legal, but — as with alcohol — they must be fit for duty when they come to work. The policy governing pot use is pretty much the same policy for drinking alcohol or using prescription drugs.
No guidelines were offered in either city on how long to wait after smoking weed or eating edibles before going to work.
