Device design and features
Toronto-based Eco Four Twenty’s Personal Air Filter with Extra Replacement Filter is today’s answer to the stoner sploof of yore—but does the update measure up?
For those unaware, a “sploof” is a classic device in the cannabis community—fashioned from an empty toilet paper or paper towel roll, stuffed with dryer sheets, capped with a dryer sheet fastened on one end with a rubber band. Used as a filter, blowing weed smoke or vapour into the uncovered end helps reduce both the amount of smoke and the smell of weed.
It’s rudimentary, cheap and works—and Eco Four Twenty’s Personal Air Filter seems aimed at updating and elevating that simple device.
Cylindrical and about the size of that empty toilet paper roll you might be currently using as a sploof, the personal air filter is made from an aircraft-grade aluminum casing. It’s sturdy and substantial when held, featuring a rubberized mouthpiece that’s pretty comfortable to blow into.
It’s split into two pieces that screw into one another. When the top part, where the mouthpiece is, is unscrewed, the inner cavity is revealed. This is where the actual air filter sits, should it need to be replaced.
The entire unit is black and sleek, with the company claiming its filter will last 500 exhales, or about two to three months of usage. At that point, the filter will need to be replaced. The filter inside the device is a medical-grade, HEPA filter that contains activated charcoal, which is known for its odour-absorbing qualities.
How does the device measure up?
The Personal Air Filter won’t be replacing my sploof anytime soon. I tend to save empty paper towel rolls to reuse them as sploofs, and while this little guy may feel more luxurious, it has not convinced me to switch. I tested out the device for about two weeks, and, in that time, I had to replace the original filter with its replacement.
Eco Four Twenty claims about how long the filter lasts fell short: even as a near-daily smoker, I couldn’t have exhausted about 500 exhales in a few weeks.
