Review by Toronto Toker for Dankr.ca.
This past Saturday (Aug 19th) Leafy Meds hosted their first sold out Invitational blind dabbing competition. This event was designed to remove any bias, and judge each dab solely on taste/experience. An organizer explained that they selected their favourite parts of other events (ex. blind judging from Karma Cup & head to head dab competitions from the MCS Throwdowns) to create the Leaf Meds Invitational. Not knowing the strain, company, or even seeing the dab on the tool, made for a lot of debate between judges try to guess which strains they were trying and which company entered the various samples.
Each company competing in the competition had a booth at the event where they were displaying, sampling and vending products. There were also lots of door prizes that were given away throughout the night, as well as pizza and unlimited water included with the $30 ticket. Door prizes consisted of a free gram of concentrates from each of the various competing companies, and apparel from Dankr.ca & Honey Badge Extracts.
How was the Leafy Meds Invitational kept it unbias?
Firstly, all the dabs were taken off of a Sublimator set to the same temperature with the water changed in-between rounds. This was to make each rig as identical as possible. The dabs where brought out in a box with a number written on it, with the dab tender being a Sublimator representative or an individual not affiliated with any of the competing companies.
The dab tender would prepare the dab in the box, and use a piece of paper/their hand to cover the dab before it hits the nail and is carb capped. This is to ensure no one sees the consistency or colour of what they are dabbing. Colour doesn’t necessarily mean everything, and some people have bias against BHO and/or Rosin.
I thought it was really refreshing how they had everything secret so the concentrate could speak for itself. This competition would be great for new extract companies to get their products displayed in front of patients to be judged with zero bias. With all the bias removed, Honey Badger Extracts was the Voters & Guest Judges pick.
I had a blast at the event! Met a bunch of new individuals that aren’t regularly at the Toronto events, which is always nice. I’ll definitely be going back to these Leafy Meds events with this being the first one, I can’t wait to see what they’ll do in the future.
