A dispensary in SE Portland was robbed at gunpoint Wednesday. The Mt. Hood Wellness Center at 11121 SE Division St. was held up at 7:15PM by three black men in their 20s, one armed with a handgun. The suspects were pulled over approximately 15 minutes after the robbery for an unrelated traffic violation which spurred all three suspects to run from the vehicle. Officers immediately took two of the men into custody and the third was located hiding in a crawl space after a local resident called 911.
According to KGW, “Police arrested 20-year-old Malik Stephens, 20-year-old Vontrell Mills and 23-year-old Jiante Fascan Carter. Officers found marijuana and cash in the suspects’ vehicle. They also seized a handgun after it was found along a wall outside Jefferson High School, according to police.”
The cannabis industry continues to struggle with security as banks remain almost universally wary of opening accounts for cannabis businesses. FDIC insurance requires banks obey strict rules regarding trafficking of money tied to drug profits – an unfortunate anachronism from the drug war which has been an enormous headache for entrepreneurs. Business owners have in many cases been forced to keep and transport large quantities of cash, a situation that makes them targets for robberies such as this.
