A California man faces felony drug charges after Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers discovered 71 pounds of marijuana hidden inside wrapped Christmas presents, according to a press release.
Authorities say they seized the drugs on Monday, Nov. 21, in a vehicle that was stopped for a driving violation on Interstate 80, south of Toledo.
The driver of a rented 2016 Ford Expedition with Washington State license plate registration was stopped for following another vehicle too closely on Interstate 80. Troopers said they observed “criminal indicators” and called in a drug-sniffing dog. During a probable cause search of the vehicle, authorities say they found 10 gift-wrapped boxes containing approximately 71 pounds of marijuana, 360 THC pills and a pound of hash wax oil.
The drugs have an estimated street value of $330,000.
The 31-year-old driver from Eureka, California, was charged with drug possession and trafficking, both second-degree felonies, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol. If convicted, he could face up to 16 years in prison and $30,000 in fines.
