Westbrook’s legislative body has voted in favor of a 180-day moratorium on recreational marijuana facilities in anticipation of a statewide move toward legalization.
Maine residents will vote on Nov. 8 about whether to legalize personal use of marijuana. The Portland Press Herald reports the Westbrook City Council took its first vote on the issue on Monday and unanimously decided on the moratorium.
The city would use the moratorium period to make regulations for marijuana businesses if there is not an outright ban. The city’s second and final vote is set for Nov. 7.
A majority of councilors in the city have already expressed interest in banning facilities that sell, grow, test or use recreational marijuana.
Westbrook is among several communities taking action in anticipation of the vote.
