Arizona residents who support a ballot measure to legalize marijuana for adult use are calling to boycott Scottsdale-based Discount Tire Company after its billionaire owner, Bruce Halle, gave $1 million to help prevent the measure from passing, Phoenix New Timesreports.
Cannabis activists with groups such as MomForce AZ and Safer Arizona were among the first to announce their boycott of the tire store after news broke of Halle’s $1 million donation to Arizonans for Responsible Drug Policy, a group working to defeat Arizona’s legalization ballot measure, Proposition 205.
Prop. 205, which will appear on Arizona’s November 2016 ballot, would legalize marijuana for adults 21 and older in Arizona, and establish a regulated system for legal retail cannabis sales.
This marks the second boycott organized against Discount Tires in recent months.
Community organizers called to boycott the company in August 2016, after some of the tire store locations began posting “Re-Elect Sheriff Joe Arpaio” signs in the windows, as reported by KPNX.
