Another perfect example of the innovative edibles currently circulating the Canadian market is Cannabiscotti, recent winners of the Karma Cup for their Cannabutter Edible category entry. Cannabiscotti is a Toronto-based edible duo that specialize in cannabis-infused biscotti and have several varieties and flavours, from lemon poppy to red velvet and so much more. Medical cannabis patients themselves, they are all too aware of the benefits of cannabis edibles as well as the legal challenges associated with them.
Unique to Cannabiscotti:
Cannabiscotti’s contain 50mg (+/- 5mg) of THC infused into canna-coconut oil. This means that their edibles will contain several beneficial cannabinoid compounds unlike edibles made with THC distillate, which requires the baker to be that much more skilled in masking the cannabis flavour. Their biscotti’s are also lab tested in a Health Canada approved lab, ensuring their biscotti’s are always consistent in potency.
Being a frequent visitor of the increasingly popular pop-up cannabis markets, I came to bump into Cannabiscotti quite often. A lovely bunch of people, I had first tried their biscotti with the samples they offered me at a Green Market. From the branding, to the packaging, to the people, and of course the biscotti, I was instantly hooked and looked forward to seeing them sell out at almost every event.
Up for review were their Blasted Peanut Butter Biscotti and their Blazed Salted Caramel Biscotti, which was actually their Karma Cup winner. As a cannabis user with a high tolerance, and given their moderate dosing, I thought I’d have both in one sitting.
First thing’s first…. Just looking at these packaged biscotti’s one will instantly notice how professionally made they are. Individually wrapped in a sealed translucent wrapper and housed in a transparent plastic box allows the biscotti to not get damaged, stay fresh (3 month shelf-life!), and not hide the beautifully crafted biscotti inside. Adorned with their simple yet classic style logo, I can easily imagine these biscottis on shelves in every coffee shop. Each biscotti comes appropriately labeled with ingredients, dosage, and warnings.
Blasted Peanut Butter Biscotti Taste, Smell and Texture:
Golden in colour, this biscotti smelled great and looked just as good. Drizzled with peanut butter and chocolate and topped with peanut butter chips, you’d have trouble not taking a bite out of this even if you had a nut allergy!
I don’t typically like biscotti’s because they tend to be dry and hard as a rock, but I’d bite into this biscotti and the pieces would crumble and melt in my mouth, unleashing a plethora of pleasing peanutty flavours. Surprisingly the biscotti had hardly any coconut or cannabis taste at all, instead blending rather well into the overall flavour.
Not too sweet, and just the right balance of peanut and chocolate flavour, this biscotti had a similar texture to a peanut butter cookie and overall tasted great.
Blazed Salted Caramel Biscotti Taste, Smell and Texture:
I can’t get enough of this biscotti! The biscotti itself is made with chocolate which isn’t typical, making it that much more unique. It’s also drizzled with caramel and chocolate, and sprinkled with some crushed rock salt. Again, another eye-pleaser.
Opening the package, the smell reminds me of a freshly baked chocolate cake. This biscotti was a bit crunchier than its peanut butter counterpart, but it still broke apart nicely and melted in my mouth.
Eating this biscotti is truly an experience for the tongue, juggling from sweet to salty as the salt crystals dissolve in your mouth. The chocolate in the biscotti was not overpowering and was masked by the intense flavours of the caramel and salt. Once again, the coconut and cannabis taste was near to none, and infused well into the overall flavour. I was saddened to see my biscotti getting shorter and shorter with every bite!
I had these two biscotti’s (totaling 100mg of THC) on a near empty stomach on a day when I hadn’t smoked that much, allowing me to be fully present to its effects. After around an hour I could sense my thoughts were not as collected and my mood was quite relaxed. Thirty minutes after, I was really struggling to organize my thoughts and just wanted to sit back and relax. My eyes were heavy and my muscles felt quite loose, which lasted for a good couple hours before wearing off.
Given the mass appeal of their biscotti’s, 50mg is the perfect dose. Not too much and not too little for the average cannabis consumer, and given how good they are, it’s very easy to have more than one if you think you’re brave enough.
I have to say, I think the reason I like Cannabiscotti so much is because of how surprisingly good they make things that I don’t typically enjoy. You would never see me grab a biscotti or anything that has salted caramel anywhere, but any hint that Cannabiscotti is around and I’m already at their booth buying a bunch of their salted caramel biscotti to take home!
