One man is being charged and one man is at large after police say they raided an alleged cannabis edibles factory in Toronto. According to police, on Wednesday, May 10, 2017, the 33 Division Street Violence Task Force executed a Controlled Drug and Substances Act search warrant in the McNicoll Avenue and Victoria Park Avenue area.

Officers confiscated large numbers of what they say are edible cannabis products from the factory. Another man was in a motor vehicle in the Denison Street and Woodbine Avenue area with a large number of edibles products inside the vehicle.

Jonathan Hlibka, 41, of Toronto, was charged with two counts of possessing Schedule II substance for trafficking and with unlawfully producing a Schedule II substance. He was scheduled to appear in court at Old City Hall on Friday, May 12, 2017, 10 a.m., room 103. Jason Teed, 28, of Toronto, is wanted for possession of a Schedule II substance for trafficking and unlawfully producing a Schedule II substance.

A Supreme Court case in 2015 upheld the rights of patients to consume and possess cannabis in any form, arguing, among other things, that the decision to use non-dried forms of marihuana for treatment of some serious health conditions is medically reasonable.” However, the court case did not cover the production and commercial sale of edibles products. Licensed producers regulated by Health Canada are licensed to produce ingestible cannabis oils, but no other derivative products are currently regulated for production or sale in Canada.
