‘Slow down,’ says Surrey Board of Trade as feds move ahead with legalizing marijuana

The Surrey Board of Trade is telling the federal government to slow down as it moves ahead with legalizing marijuana by apparently next summer.

“The major focus of the task force report released last Fall, was on youth, driving, and distribution,” said Board CEO Anita Huberman. “There was little consideration for workplace concerns or potential solutions for workplaces.”

She says the government should draw up a definition of impairment for the workplace.

“If you’re using medical marijuana, if you’re operating machinery, if you’re in the workplace using a computer, what are the productivity issues, what are the rights to not only that person who is using but to the employer themselves.”

Huberman says her 6,000 member businesses in a survey say marijuana legalization and the implications is their number one concern.

The federal government’s plan to roll out legalization will include broader powers for the provinces than had been previously expected.
