While Vancouver may be known for its numerous marijuana dispensaries, Richmond is trying for a different reputation.
City Councillor Bill McNulty says they want to send a message to retailers that “you need not apply because it’s going to get turned down.”
On Monday, city council received a committee recommendation to amend a zoning bylaw that would disallow dispensary permits.
McNulty expects a unanimous ratification when the recommendation goes to a vote next week.
“We outlawed the sale of puppies in puppy mills in Richmond, we said no, and we were unanimous on it, I don’t think there would be a leak in council at all.”
Even if Ottawa makes good on its promise of legalization, McNulty is confident his community will still say no to marijuana retail.
