Prince Edward Island’s fabled red dirt will be dotted green thanks to newly released regulations allowing up to four cannabis plants per home. The rules will also permit weed consumption in “certain designated spaces” after recreational cannabis becomes law, albeit the specifics remain vague.

The province had previously announced the legal age for purchasing cannabis will be 19 and the maximum legal carry amount will be 30 grams. Cannabis will be made available for purchase at four government-run stores across the island as well as online. (There are 25 liquor stores in P.E.I., with five in Charlottetown.) The limited outlets makes the homegrown allowance, as long as minors can’t access the plants, particularly important for consumers. Government retailers will be selling seeds and seedlings as well as cannabis flower and oil but not edibles.

Home growing weed will be banned in Manitoba and Quebec, while other provinces have various levels of restrictions, such as B.C. permitting landlords to forbid the plants or New Brunswick allowing cannabis to be grown indoors and outdoors but only in lockable spaces.
