Municipalities in Ontario & BC prepare for marijuana legalization

As the federal government’s Task Force on Marijuana Legalization and Regulation meets with stakeholders across the country and processes input from the general public, many municipalities are taking their own proactive approach to preparing for legal marijuana.

While cities like Vancouver and Victoria and several small towns in BC have begun establishing or at least looking at ways to regulate retail dispensaries and compassion clubs, earlier this year one group of municipalities in Ontario, the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (representing Ontario’s 444 municipalities) announced the formation of their own task force to investigate marijuana legalization.

The AMO’s task force will “engage with federal and provincial governments about roles and responsibilities and implementation questions around the pending new marijuana legalized [sic] regime.” The AMO is also presenting on the subject at their AGM and annual conference next weekend.
