When you first enter the hall at the Edmonton Expo Centre this weekend, you can see booths lined with black fabric, heavy metal in the background and the buzz of tattoo needles humming through the air.
The Edmonton Tattoo and Arts festival is back in the city for the sixth time and it’s sharing the room with a new expo in town, the Edmonton Cannabis & Hemp Expo.
Featuring local artists, celebrity artists like Ink MastersJoey Hamilton and Big Ceeze and people who want to be pieces of art, the event includes ink exhibits, stage performances, bad tattoo contests and a live wedding.
“We have an incredible stage show going on,” said show director Kevin Blackburn. One of those shows is called infuego, a show with pyrotechnics and aerialists hanging from the roof — a well-rounded fire-and-circus act. “We’re talking a lot of fire.” said Blackburn.
If you’re headed to the expo and are thinking of getting a tattoo, that is an option.
“There are walk-up appointments … A lot of artists book up before the show, but there’s also a lot that are still available.” said Blackburn.
Beau Sheane from Edmonton was getting an elaborate tattoo, with a wolf head and axes and some roses across his chest, his third time getting a tattoo at the expo. “It’s probably going to be all day, I’m thinking it might take another session but we’ll see how long I can last. It’s a sensitive spot.”
