Press Release, Victoria, B.C.: A group of cannabis related business and advocates in Victoria have endorsed a slate of Green Party candidates on Southern Vancouver Island in the upcoming provincial election.
Alex Robb, General Manager of Trees Dispensary, said: “From the perspective of the local cannabis industry, this is the most important election in the province’s history. We know that the provincial government that is elected on May 9th will become the one that legalizes cannabis, and develops a model for regulating the cannabis marketplace in BC. The Green Party has been the most vocal about protecting existing craft cannabis jobs in BC, and that is why we are supporting them this election.”
Green Party Leader Andrew Weaver has stated: “The feds should simply remove cannabis from their Controlled Drug and Substances Act and stay out of the business of saying who can or can’t produce it.” He said of the Green party position,“We favour policies that support a craft cannabis industry that is provincially regulated, tested, taxed and is local. We view the craft cannabis industry in a manner that’s identical to the craft beer industry.”
The recent Vancouver Island Health Authority ban on the sale of edible cannabis products in Island dispensaries serves as an example of the kind of regulatory issues that the next provincial government will have to tackle.
Vancouver Island is home to many hundreds of people who make their living in the craft cannabis industry, either growing small batches of plants as designated growers for people with a medical need, or processing cannabis into oils, edible products, tinctures, or other value-added products.
Members of the BC Independent Cannabis Alliance on Vancouver Island have jointly endorsed the campaigns of Green Party candidates Andrew Weaver in the riding of Oak Bay-Gordon Head, Kalen Harris in Victoria-Beacon Hill, Chris Maxwell in Victoria-Swan Lake, Sonia Furstenau in Cowichan Valley, and Adam Olsen in Saanich North, and Mark Neufeld in Saanich South.
