Health Canada reports that as of January 31, 2017, there were nearly 142,541 clients registered with licensed producers of medical cannabis.
This figure is up from 130,000 as of December 31 of last year. At the end of June, 2015, there were almost 24,000 registered patients, increasing exponentially each quarter. As more Canadians become aware of Canada’s medical access program, and more physicians are comfortable with issuing recommendations for cannabis, the numbers continue to increase.
Full market data is available on Health Canada’s website here, although the data has not been updated since November of last year. Updates are expected in the coming weeks. These two figures come from requests to Health Canada by Lift.
The number of clients registered with licensed producers is the number of registrations that were active on the last day of the reporting period. This does not include any cancelled or non-renewed authorizations at that date.Past growth has shown a steady increase in patients registered under Health Canada’s Access to Cannabis for Medical Purposes Regulations (ACMPR, formerly the MMPR, the Marihuana for Medical Purposes Regulations) since their implementation in mid 2013. You can explore past analysis of market data under the ACMPR and MMPR from Lift here.
