The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) made waves in the sporting world with its recent decision to remove cannabidiol (CBD) from its list of banned substances in 2018. This upcoming move will allow athletes from across the sports world to finally be able to use certain cannabis-based products as part of their training and recovery regimens.
The new WADA Prohibited List for January 2018 includes performance enhancing substances like androsterone and testosterone, nandrolone, growth hormone, epinephrine, and cortisone. Notably in the list for 2018, although CBD is now exempt, all other natural and synthetic cannabinoids are still prohibited from use.
WADA was originally created by the International Olympic Committee to coordinate and monitor drug use in sports. Beyond Olympic athletes, WADA is responsible for regulating the use of illicit and performance enhancing drugs in athletes from a number of sports organizations, including baseball and softball, dance, lacrosse, kickboxing, bodybuilding, cheer, and many more.
WADA’s recent announcement enables Medical Marijuana, Inc. and its family of companies to begin to attract the athletics market with THC-free CBD products.
In 2015, Wada tested over 300,000 athletes worldwide. Of those tested, around 4% showed signs of cannabinoids in their system. Under previous regulations the use of any cannabinoids, including CBD, would automatically disqualify any athlete who tested positive. Now, these athletes can use CBD without fear of failing WADA drug screens.
Medical Marijuana, Inc.’s holds the unique position as the industry leader in CBD oil products. This brand recognition will help the company dominate the CBD market for athletes, adding to its exposure.
The sports nutrition market was estimated to be over $11 billion by Euromonitor International and is projected to grow to $14 billion by 2019. The CBD oil market is likewise anticipated to grow and is expected to reach $1 billion by the end of the decade, if not before. The combination of these two rapidly growing sectors will represent a significant expansion of sales opportunities for Medical Marijuana, Inc.
