More Canadians Support Legalization Than Love Hockey

Hockey could have some competition for being Canada’s reigning, unofficial national pastime.

Legal cannabis is, apparently, rivalling hockey for a place in the hearts of those in the Great White North. In a poll recently commissioned by CTV News, seven in 10 Canadians said they supported marijuana legalization. Contrast that with the results of this 2012 survey on how important hockey is to Canadians. Just four in 10 said they watched hockey occasionally: another one in four reporting they “loved” the sport. Both studies used a sample size of 1,000 Canadians.

In terms of how, specifically, Canadians feel about marijuana legalization, 43 per cent of Canadians said they support the legalization of marijuana, while 26 percent say they support the idea “somewhat.” CTV News offered the following breakdown of support for legalization by province.

With those kinds of numbers, we might have to consider adding cannabis to the roster of stereotypically Canadian things, up there with Mounties, beavers, and maple syrup.
